COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed as the foundational course for both the Graphics Production and Graphics Design pathways. The Graphics and Design course provides students with the processes involved in the technologies of printing, publishing, packaging, electronic imaging, and their allied industries. In addition, the Graphics and Design course offers a range of cognitive skills, aesthetics, and crafts that includes typography, visual arts, and page layout. Pre-requisite for this course is adviser approval.

SYNERGY ACCESS TO GRADES:

It is strongly encouraged that you keep your Synergy login information in a safe place and that you have access to the information when needed. Parents should contact the Main Office (770 819 2521).

Please note that when you are viewing grades in Synergy that a blank grade column for your child has no effect on their grade.  If the space is blank, then your student may not have turned in that assignment due to absence or the teacher may not have entered grades for that assignment at that time.  An “X” means that the student is exempt from an assignment at the discretion of the teacher.

POLICY FOR CELL PHONES

  • Students shall not use, display or turn on cellular phones, video phones, or electronic devices during instruction time except when a teacher uses these devices for instructional purposes. The consequences for inappropriate cell phone use are:

1st offense – Warning

2nd offense – Forceful Warning

3rd offense – 2 Days of ISS

POLICY FOR TARDIES

  • Students entering the class late must have a tardy slip stamped with the time.
  • Students, who arrive after the bell without a tardy slip will be marked tardy.
  • Excessive tardies will serve 2 days ISS.
  • Attendance is critical to the student’s AND their Production Team’s success in this class.

POLICY FOR MAKE-UP WORK

  • Students will be allowed to make up any work missed during an EXCUSED absence. The absence MUST be excused and the admit slip must be presented within two days of returning from the absence.
  • It is the STUDENT’s responsibility to present the admit slip and request any materials, assignments, assessments, etc. from the teacher.
  • Students have five (5) school days to turn in assignments or make up assessments. All missing assignments will be recorded as a zero until the assignment is turned in and graded.
  • Students who know they will be absent need to let any partners and Mr. Wardlaw know in advance.
  • Students absent for more than 50% of a production project may be assigned a separate individual project to make up the work.

POLICY FOR LATE WORK

  • If a student is present at school for any part of the school day, he or she is expected to turn in work due that day. Failure to do so makes the work one day late.
  • Assignments are due by the end of the period of the due date. Assignments turned in late will be subject to the following penalties: Assignments turned in after the period due but by the end of the day: 10% penalty; 1 day late: 25% penalty, 2 days late: 50% penalty and 3 days late: 75% penalty. Late assignments will not be accepted beyond the third day.

POLICY FOR FOOD/DRINK

  • Absolutely NO food or drink is allowed beyond the classroom doors and near computers or production equipment.
  • If approved by instructor only, students may eat or drink in our “break room” area
    and students are responsible for fully cleaning up their area.
  • Failure to do so will forfeit the privilege of eating/drinking in the “break room”.

USE OF PHOTOGRAPHY / FILM / MEDIA

  • Due to the nature of the course, we will be studying from a variety of television, film, print and internet media.
  • Student material produced with school equipment are the property of the school and may be used for instruction, posted on the internet, shown on television, or submitted to a variety of media festivals nationwide.
  • Additionally, footage of students, their work, and classroom activities may be used for various classroom-related purposes and may be posted to the internet or the blog. No last names will be used. Cobb County media policies will be followed at all times.

PROFESSIONALISM

  • Introduction to Graphics and Design (IGD) is a Career Tech class and in many cases will be modeled after “real world” jobs. To that end, we will be developing the professional skills needed to prepare the students for college and the workforce.
  • Each student will be asked to use a gmail e-mail address. If they do not have one they will be ask to make one using the following format:
    • ( first initial of first name)(last name).pbhs@gmail.com
  • Each student will produce a presentation capes deck with examples of their best work
  • We will use Schoology in the classroom to share work.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

  • USB Flash Drive (8 GB+): Students will be working with a variety of large media files as they complete projects. Due to the limited storage capacity, the students will need their own flash drive to store their finished projects.
  • Design elements. Students will need a variety of equipment, some of which we will announce as the semester goes on. To begin the semester, students should have something to write with and a spiral, composition book or moleskin sketchbook.  Colored pencils, drawing pencils and graphic paper would be helpful.

EQUIPMENT USE & CHECKOUT

  • Students are responsible for the proper use & care of all equipment, whether they are working alone or in a group.
  • Improper use of equipment may result in the forfeiture of equipment privileges which may impact grades on projects. Future use will be determined by Mr. Wardlaw after demonstrating a renewed sense of responsibility.  Damaging equipment could also mean removal from the program/class and exclusion from taking more advanced classes.
  • DAMAGE POLICY: If equipment is damaged or broken while under the supervision of a student due to negligence, improper use, inappropriate conduct or carelessness, the student is responsible for the cost required to repair or replace the equipment as this is damage of school property.  This equipment policy is a standard policy for all programs at Pebblebrook High School and is supported by the administration at both the school and county level.

PROPER USE OF COMPUTERS, INTERNET, AND DIGITAL MEDIA

  • Students in Graphics and Design use the computers / internet for work on individual and group projects. Computers are not to be used for internet browsing, personal entertainment, or work on other class assignments.
  • Furthermore, students must also know and follow the acceptable use policies for Cobb County Schools and Pebblebrook High School. All content, whether video or audio, must be school appropriate.
  • Students who misuse the computers or use content that is inappropriate will face consequences, including but not limited to a failing grade on the project, removal of computer/equipment privileges, and the assignment of book work in lieu of media projects. In some cases, as student could be removed from the program / class due to this misuse.
